The two young filmmakers Peter B. and Olaf Deussen dived for four months into the Arab-Mediterranean world and its cultures. They condensed their experiences in this 45 minutes documentary.
For this purpose they traveled through the Arab Mediterranean countries in an adapted minibus. The tour took them from Germany, through Europe into the Middle East and from there through North Africa back to Europe. The road trip builds the thread of the documentary.
Interview-sequences, observations and road trip elements are intertwined. The focus lies on Lebanon, Egypt and Morocco. Similarities and differences between the European and the Arab world are stressed in the interviews and the observations. The road trip elements focus on every day life scenes and problems of the journey.
The documentary “The Arab world seen through European eyes” proposes a view of the Arab World far beyond terrorism and fundamentalism and invites to discover the Arab World through ones own eyes.

Boston, eine Fußgänger-freundliche Stadt, lässt uns bequem mit der T nach Cambridge rüberfahren. So besuchen wir zwei der berühmtesten Universitäten: Mit der Harvard Campus Walking Tour, geführt von einer Kunst-Studentin im dritten Studienjahr, kostenlos und interessant. Das MIT habe ich schon letztes Mal besucht, nun gehen wir mit einem MIT-Studenten bei einem leckeren Asien-Restaurant essen: Thai Pad.
PEK, zum ersten, zum zweiten und zum dritten
Beijing, da war ich doch schon mal, letztes Jahr im Dezember. Da reisten wir mit dem Nachtzug an, schliefen in einer Jugendherberge und ließen uns von Doctor Tom die verbotene Stadt zeigen.
Nun, Ende Mai, Anfang Juni und Ende Juli, dreimal hintereinander in Folge (ein Zwischen-Fall machte diese Lücke erforderlich), flog ich direkt nach PEK, wurde mit dem Bus zum Kempinski Hotel gebracht und spazierte durch den Ritan-Park, in dem sich Jung und Alt auf öffentlichen Geräten trimmte. Beim dritten Mal nicht, da war ich auf dem Cotton Markt (richtig, eine Kleider-Höhle und Shopping-Hölle). Peking-Ente gab es auch.
Nächstes Mal werde ich dann die Kletterwand im Ritan-Park ausprobieren.
Almería
Almería, España.
Despues de una noche en un club techno en Madrid llego a la ciudad de Almería. Lleno de playas. Hay sol. Siempre. Bueno, no en la noche. Desde el departamento de Tobias hasta la playa: 120 secundos. Vacaciones, finalmente.
Visité tambien la PSA, la Plataforma Solar de Almería, el Centro Europeo de Ensayos de Energía Solar. Allá Tobi y sus colegas del DLR investigan la optimización de la curvatora de los espejos usados para focalizar la luz del sol. Impresionante.
Frankfurt – Almería und zurück
Sonntag abend gehe ich ins Reisebüro (ja, Sonntag, es ist meine Welt, und da haben Sonntags die Reisebüros geöffnet) und versuche, eine Flugverbindung für den darauffolgenden Tag nach Almería zu buchen. Zurück doch bitte am folgenden Samstag.
Leider sind die Iberia Regional-Flieger nachmittags alle immer voll, ich könne aber heute abend nach Madrid, damit ich dann morgen früh einen Flug nehmen kann. Was macht man 8 Stunden mitten in der Nacht in Madrid? In einer komplett verrauchten Technodisco “Cassette” tanzen, klar, was auch sonst. Ich liebe unser Nichtraucherschutzgesetz! Gilt leider nicht in Spanien, liebe EU, das wär’ doch was für euch, oder?
In Almería wohne ich bei Tobias mit Meerblick, zwei Minuten zum Strand. Ich besuche seinen Arbeitsplatz auf der PSA in der wüstenartigen Ebene.
Der Rückflug geht über Barcelona, sobald ich am neuen Terminal am Gate stehe, bin ich zuhause.
